Sardelada 2025: a July event to discover the authentic flavours of Lake Garda

On 12 July 2025, Riva del Garda hosts one of the summer’s most anticipated events: the Sardelada, the historic lake fish festival that every year attracts locals, food lovers and visitors in search of genuine flavours and a friendly atmosphere.

An event that celebrates a tradition deeply rooted in the gastronomic history of the area, where the lake sardine is the undisputed star.

A summer ritual that feels like home

The gathering takes place in the Parco del Brolio, starting from 6:30 pm. Here, the festival of taste comes alive: open-air tables, delicious aromas in the air, smiles and raised glasses.
The volunteers of the Amici della Tirlindana association, guardians of local culture and passionate fishermen, will serve a plate of sardines prepared in three ways: fried, grilled, and in sisam, a traditional Lake Garda marinade, accompanied by polenta with sardine sauce and local extra virgin olive oil. All to be enjoyed, of course, with a fresh glass of white wine.

History and identity on a plate

Once considered the poor man’s fish, the Lake Garda sardine was for centuries a precious resource for fishermen and their families. Its rich, tasty meat was eaten fresh, grilled, or preserved in salt for the winter months.
According to legend, this species was originally marine: thousands of years ago, it swam up the Po and Mincio rivers and eventually adapted to life in Lake Garda, where it became trapped following a period of drought. Today, the Garda sardine is an integral part of the local food identity, celebrated in simple yet meaningful dishes.
